The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) awards several translation prizes, hosts an annual translation conference, and offers advice about topics such as the process of translation or how to have your translations published.  Their website is here: http://www.utdallas.edu/alta/

ALTA is a great organization.  Is anyone headed to their conference this year?  It'll be in Bloomington, Indiana from Oct. 16-19th (check it out here: http://www.utdallas.edu/alta/conference/current-conference).  I'll be talking about the Center's translation programs on a panel on Thursday afternoon.

Thoughts about whether it's worth it to become a member?  I'm mostly interested in the email list and the journals they publish.

ALTA is a great organization--  if you're unsure as to whether to join up formally, I'd recommend first attending their conference (always a great time; to be held Nov. 12-16th in Milwaukee next year).  There are registration fees for the conference, but no requirement to join, at least in past years, so it would give you a good insight in the group before signing up.  In any case, the benefits of membership are certainly worth it, and if you're a student, I believe membership fees are only $30 or so.
