EXAMPLE(S)
אז שוין סופ די 60ער יאָרן האָט זיך אין ווילנע געגרינדעט אַ קאאפעראטיוו פון יידישע גראווירער מיטן צוועק ניט צו דערלאזן צום וואַרפן די פרײַזן...
NOTES
I am reading and translating an article from the Yivo Bletter from May 1931 about Leo Jogiches and it uses the phrase וואַרפֿן די פרײַזן. It says that a קאָאָפעראַטיוו established that its members could not do this. How would I translate this? Does it mean to "jack up the price"?
They didn't want to "beat down the price", which is the opposite of "jack up the price" - I think.
YID: varfn; DE: werfen, EN: throw, toss, cast (Beinfeld/Bochner 2002, p. 276)
Brainstorming: .... capitalists beat down prices.... workers pay the real price..... hard working conditions... burning sweatshops in Bangladesh.... the Triangle Fire in NY...... Jewish workers founding a "Kooperative"!?..... YIddish is such a socialist language...
